Opening week is behind us now and despite elk not being in their traditional areas that we target opening weekend, we did do very well through the rest of the week in other areas. The first day was warm and windy. After that the winds kept howling for a couple more days as the temps fell and some snow flurries where flying in the higher elevations. We took advantage of the whitetail movement when that front moved through and tagged two beautiful Montana whitetails! One was a solid 10 point and the other was a big 13 point.
The elk hunting was slow in the areas we thought it would be best, and great in the areas we hardly ever see elk, go figure. We did get 4 bulls out of 6 elk hunters. One hunter that didn't get one had a bull feeding at roughly 205-210 yards and only had to take 5 more steps to clear some trees and he would have got a shot. However, the big bull turned and walked stright away in the only spot he couldn't get a shot. The other hunter had a big 7x6 bull at 455 yards but wasn't comfortable shooting past 300. At the time the bull didn't offer us a shot but then walked over the ridge and out of sight not to return.
All 4 of the combo guys did harvest their whitetail. 3 of the 4 got both their elk and whitetail. So far the season has been tough but successful non the less. Hoping we get some snow and colder weather and then the elk should be moved into the lower elevations and feed more heavily moving around and showing themselves. I'll post more next week after we get started.
